The Summer Palace (Yiheyuan) lies 11.2 km. (7 mi.) northwest of Tian'anmen Square in Beijing's Haidian district. The palace grounds occupy a vast park (one of four protected by the state) of 280 hectares (692 acres.) The grounds are demarcated by Longevity Hill to the north and Kunming Lake to the south. The lake, which is used for swimming and boating in the summer and skating in the winter, occupies three-quarters of the total park area.

The Summer Palace was constructed in 1888 by the erratic and Machiavellian Empress Dowager Ci Xi, using funds originally intended for the imperial navy. The empress used part of the funds to erect an extravagant marble boat that sits on the edge of the palace's Kunming Lake. Ci Xi was also responsible for the beautiful Painted Gallery, a wooden walkway decorated with exquisite landscapes that girds the north shore of the lake.

After entering the walled grounds through a red gate, the visitor passes a number of buildings, each with its own lyrical name: the East Palace Gate (Donggongmen), guarded by a splendid bronze Lion; the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity (Renshoudian); the Garden of Virtuous Harmony (Deheyuan); the Hall of Happiness and Longevity (Leshantang); and the Hall of jade Billows (Yulantang). Some have been open to the public only since 1979. Formerly used as elegant apartments for members of the royal family, these buildings still contain the original jewel-encrusted furniture and precious art objects.

Longevity Hill is the focal point of the Summer Palace. The panoramic view from the summit is well worth the climb. From here the visitor gazes out at the 17-Arch Bridge, the jade Belt Bridge, and a lovely stone pagoda perched on a distant hill. The glazed golden tiles of the palace roofs, shimmering in sunlight, have inspired many traditional Chinese landscape paintings.
